What to Pack: A Simple Guide

Over the years, my packing style has changed a lot. I used to carry huge bags, but now I pack only what I really need—everything fits into one backpack! Here’s what I’ve learned about packing light and smart.

The Key: Pack as Little as Possible

I always start by listing everything I think I might need, then cut the list in half. Ask yourself: “Will I really use this enough to carry the extra weight?” Most of the time, the answer is no. If you forget something, you can usually buy it on the road.

I also pack clothes for a similar climate so I don’t have to bring too many different items. I usually pack enough clothes for 7-10 days and do laundry along the way.

My Suggested Packing List

(Note: This list is for traveling to warm or mild climates. If you’re going somewhere cold, adjust your list accordingly.)

1. Gear

  • Laptop
  • Smartphone
  • Universal power adapter/converter
  • Portable charger
  • Kindle (if you like reading without carrying books)
  • Camera (if you want more than just smartphone photos)

2. Clothes

  • 5 t-shirts
  • 1 long-sleeved t-shirt
  • 1 pair of jeans (or khakis if you need something that dries faster)
  • 1 pair of shorts
  • 7 pairs of underwear
  • 1 bathing suit
  • 1 pair of flip-flops
  • 1 pair of sneakers
  • 8 pairs of socks (I always lose some!)
  • 1 pair of dress shoes (if you plan to visit nicer places)
  • 1 dress shirt
  • 1 pair of black dress socks

3. Toiletries

  • Toothbrush
  • Toothpaste
  • Dental floss
  • Deodorant
  • Razor
  • Small bottle of shampoo
  • Small bottle of shower gel
  • Towel (always pack a towel!)

4. Small Medical Kit

  • Band-Aids
  • Hydrocortisone cream
  • Antibacterial cream
  • Eye drops
  • Tylenol (or another pain reliever)
  • Hand sanitizer

For more details on first aid kits, look up guides on making one for travel.

5. Miscellaneous Items

  • A key or combination lock (to secure your stuff)
  • Headlamp (very useful at night)
  • Ziplock bags
  • LifeStraw (a water filter for safe drinking water)

A Special Tip:

Use a small backpack. A big bag makes you want to fill empty space, which can lead to overpacking. A smaller bag forces you to bring only the essentials.

Final Thoughts

This list works for my “chase the summer, live in hostels” lifestyle. Your list might be different, and that’s okay. The main idea is that you don’t need to bring a lot. Pack light, and you’ll have everything you need without the extra weight. Enjoy your travels!
